These are nascent thoughts I had while flicking though multiple streaming services. This is not new, if you can imagine the ascendance of Netflix initially DVDs by post then streaming and the introduction of competing streaming providers to the market. The thought I had was, are we at an inflection point in the timeline? These points for streaming from my perspective are: Technology change e.g. AI, Virtual reality, product maturity, market consolidation. The existence of precursors: People (user behaviour, segmentation), Process e.g. new channels, crossover formats (gaming\movies) and interactivity. Technology e.g. hard ware \ software development. and PESTLE: the key external factors (Political, Economic, Sociological, Technological, Legal and Environmental) that influence an organisation\or service.

The overview

In the ever-expanding world of subscription video on-demand over-the-top (SVOD OTT) streaming services, users are faced with a multitude of options like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, Disney+, Paramount, and more. However, a growing challenge for these platforms is the persistent issue of churn, stickability, and profitability. Many of these services are contemplating yearly subscriptions akin to traditional cable services.

 Challenges for Users: The Common Blues

Users of SVOD OTT services often encounter several issues that impact their viewing experience, leading to a lack of loyalty and, ultimately, churn.

1.  Content Library Changes: Constant content rotation can result in the loss of favourite shows or movies due to expiring licensing agreements.

2.  Price Increases:  Subscription fee hikes can lead to dissatisfaction among users, especially if perceived value doesn’t align with the cost.

3.  Quality of Service:  Technical glitches, buffering, and streaming issues can diminish the overall viewing experience.

4.  Competition and Fragmentation:  Increasing competition has led to content fragmentation, requiring users to subscribe to multiple platforms, causing subscription fatigue.

5.  Limited Regional Content:  Geo-restrictions limit access to a broader range of shows and movies, frustrating users in certain regions.

3.  Community Forums and Events: Create community forums and events within the streaming service, allowing users to discuss shows, participate in virtual events, and connect with other enthusiasts who share similar interests.

4.  Personalized Merchandise Offers:  Offer personalized merchandise discounts or exclusive items related to users’ favourite shows or genres as part of a loyalty program.

5.  Accessibility Features: Enhance accessibility features, including customizable subtitles, audio descriptions, and options for different languages, ensuring a more inclusive experience for a diverse audience.
